Dowlais mills churn out hundreds of miles of rail and millions of spikes. By the 1840s, the company ranks among the world's largest ironworks. 1854: John Sutton Nettlefold begins mass-producing screws; company soon grows to dominate British screw-making 1857: Dowlais signs first license for Henry Bessemer's process to mass-produced steel. 1864: Patent Nut & Bolt Co. goes public; founder Arthur Keen begins decades of acquisitions
