Challenge: Eliminate the woodruff key assembly operations required on all timing gears being assembled to crankshafts. Proposed customer design included added machining operation, redesign of current crankshafts and higher costs.
Solution: GKN redesigned customer proposal to include an internal key and made minor crankshaft modifications to accommodate gear – without modifying manufacturing method, adding an operation or increasing price.
Result: Customer eliminated a bottleneck assembly operation, increased production capacity and saved significant manufacturing costs.
