GKN’s innovative 901 material offers breakthrough alloy technology for backing and apply clutch plates. This low-cost alloy system replaces more expensive elements, and subsequent ‘rounding’ of micropores increases the fatigue strength of the components enabling the use of standard furnaces, rather than costly high-temperature furnaces. The end result is a more cost effective component with better dimensional quality.
- 901 material is process friendly for excellent flatness, roundness
and thickness control
- Transient Liquid Phase (TLP) sintering at 2070° F results
in much less distortion than 2300° F
- No need for grinding or sanding
Case Study
Challenge: Bending and thermal fatigue in clutch plates made by fine blanking, upsetting and welding.
Solution: Replace a three sheet metal stamped product with a single plate with lugs using GKN 901 material and a P/M process involving pressing, sintering, coining and deburring.
Results: 40% cost reduction. Significant improvement in both bending and thermal fatigue.
