The precision of powder forged connecting rods offers features for more reliable fixturing and improved dimensional capability. GKN's powder forged process and dimensional stability eliminates the need for con rod weight milling and weight classification prior to engine assembly.
  • 20% less stock removal when compared to traditional forged con rods
  • Fatigue endurance limits exceeding 300 MPA
  • Precise outer profile delivers reliable datum features for consistent placement in finish machining fixtures
  • Process and dimensional stability eliminate weight milling and classifying

Case Study

Challenges: Improve tool life during boring operation where interrupted cuts were being caused by broaching of the V-notch needed to fracture the con rod. Reduce down time caused by chip buildup.
Solution: GKN's patented forged-in stress rider was added to the con rod blank forging.
Result: : Customer was able to reduce insert cost from $120 per insert to $3.00 per insert. Chip buildup was also substantially reduced. Total savings to the customer - in excess of $340,000 per year.
