Cam Caps
For nearly a decade, GKN has manufactured millions of powder metal parts, including aluminum cam caps for use in overhead cam engines. These powder metal parts are produced to the highest dimensional accuracy and metallurgical quality. Thermal response and machinability are matched to that of aluminum die cast materials.

GKN's patented Z-Loc technology offers an alternative to expensive fitted dowels used for relocation. Z-Loc features are formed during the compaction process, ensuring precise and consistent form and location, and offering superior alignment, thus reducing engine friction. Intentional microporosity in the cam caps facilitates the retention of motor oil to aid in lubrication of the cam shaft during cold starts.

Case Study

Challenge: In working with Ford Motor Company, a new aluminum cam cap was developed that eliminates costly machining process and improves relocation fit after line-boring, cap removal and re-assembly.
Solution: GKN's P/M aluminum cam caps featuring Z-Loc technology
Results: Cost savings and higher performance. Multiple machining operations are eliminated because P/M process produces net-shape features with superior dimensional quality. Location dowels and/or special shoulder bolts are eliminated. Significant improvement in realignment and microporosity helps retain oil.
